The Jungle Book is a 1967 American animated musical film produced by Walt Disney Productions. Inspired by the Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, it tells the story of Mowgli, an orphaned boy raised in the jungles of India by wolves, who ultimately meets human beings. The film was released on October 18, 1967 to widespread critical acclaim and made $23 million at the box office. Set in a time when India is under British rule wherever possible this film tells you about learning experience for Mowgli who goes through so much difficulty to survive in jungle with no parents or family to take care. Mowgli is an orphan child who is brought up by wolves in jungle. Baloo, a bear and Bagheera, a black panther teach Mowgli the art of hunting and surviving in jungle while protecting him from Shere Khan, a tiger who wants to kill him at any cost. Mowgli also befriends a white-fanged bear nicknamed "Bagheera" after the black panther that found him in a human village. The animals in the jungle do not mention why they want Mowgli to stay with them but there are many hints shown throughout the movie which tell you why Mowgli was given to wolves by mother wolf when he was baby i.e. to be fed, to protect and to teach him the art of hunting. If Mowgli were left with the wolves, he would be killed by the tiger Shere Khan who is looking for revenge on them for killing his father. The animals are all seen working hard to teach Mowgli the art of hunting and survival in jungle. Bagheera also puts Mowgli through many hardships by taking him across huge wildernesses, teaching him courage and teaching him to fight for his survival against wild animals. By the end of movie you can see that Mowgli has become a young adult who has learnt many valuable lessons during his years with wolves which he uses throughout his life as an adult human being. According to "Time" magazine, "Disney's Jungle Book is a film of moments: images of long summer days, the chirping of birds and the roars of jungle beasts. The pace varies from scene to scene—sometimes gliding steadily onward, sometimes jerking forward with the music. But it is always dreamlike." The film was released on October 18, 1967 in 400 theaters in United States and Canada in English by Buena Vista Distribution. It also received a premiere at Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City on October 31, 1967. It earned an estimated $3 million in its first weekend with release in 73 countries. Worldwide it earned about US$100 million. It was released on VHS in October 15, 1985 by Walt Disney Home Video. In 2006, the film's copyright was renewed and it was re-released in a new widescreen version. The film has been considered a modern classic for its soundtrack, animation and combination of live action and animation. The movie won several awards, including two Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. It won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
